New Age Banking: ICICI Launches New Facebook Payment App ‘Pockets’

Banking is one thing I have always had trouble with since childhood. How to get a demand draft issued? Where is the cheque number in the cheque? Why are the white slips different from the yellow and pink slips? And you can imagine my respite when banks started going the digital way – online banking has transformed the way banking was ever imagined.Exploiting every new technology that has been created, banking has become one of the friendliest and easiest industries to handle – online and offline both. And the only way they could do it is reinventing them and constantly changing as per the demands of the society.
India’s largest private sector bank, ICICI Bank, has done exactly the same. The Bank, which has a network of 3,350 branches and 10,486 ATM’s in India, and a presence in 19 countries, has nowlaunched a Facebook app ‘Pockets’, to enable its customers to transact directly from the social networking site.

With the target audience clearly being the youth and the gen-next, the new app will allowmoney transfer, mobile recharge and even book movie tickets from their Facebook pages. The best part is there would be no additional surcharge of using this payment gateway.
What’s more is: It allows the customers to split and track group expenses and share them with their friends on the social media site. For pending payments, even reminders can be sent to friends via the app.
For every new transaction, the bank would send a one-time password which would expire within a certain time-limit (a OTP), just to make the transaction more secure. It also uses 128 bit encryption which keeps customer information safe and runs on https, making transactions secure.
Chanda Kochhar, the bank’s MD and CEO, believes: “The app will enable young consumers who spend a lot of time on Facebook to carry out a wide set of transactions without having to leave the social media site.” Her statement makes more sense when it is realized that one-third of the bank’s customers are under the age of 30 and this target-group would either play Subway Surfer on their mobiles or be active on Facebook. Facebook has nearly 95 million users across India andclose to 65 million of them are below the age of 30 years and thus this move by ICICI Bank perfectly gels with the current demographics and trends of Indian youth.
According to a comScore “2013 India Digital Future in Focus” report, “86% of web users are visiting the site and 217 minutes are being spent on Facebook by an average user,” thus making perfect sense for any industry to be present where its maximum customers are. Not only will the perception of banks being ‘unfriendly’ to the youth fade away, it will also establish ICICI Bank as a trend-setter to spearhead the changing touch-points of today’s youth.
Last year, ICICI Bank had launched the Facebook app ‘Your Bank’, allowing customers to view their saving account details and statements on the social media site plus order cheque books.
While national behemoths like State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank are mostly resting on their laurels (read: huge customer base), private banks are leaving no stone unturned to be in sync with their customers and the trends. No wonder gen-next prefers private banks which do ‘Khayal Aapka.’ This move would undoubtedly push the limits of mobile banking in India!

Death Of SMS: Indians Are Now Sending Only 2 SMS Per Day!

Two years ago, Indians used to send 9 SMS per day but in the month of July, 2013, only 2 SMS per day were sent!
In a recent survey by Nielson, India, it was revealed that mobile chat applications such as Nimbuzz and WhatsApp have literally destroyed the SMS culture and usage inside India. Powered by internet, these applications are prompting Indians to ditch SMS which normally costs Re 1 to Rs 1.5 for local numbers and as high as Rs 5 for international numbers.
On the other hand, the mobile chat applications are absolutely free to use and as a result, on an average, Indians are using these apps for 27 minutes a day.
This trend is not a one-off case. Researchers and trend watchers have observed this phenomenon to occur in USA and China as well. Famous chat applications in China such as Weibo and WeChat have triggered massive downfall in SMS usage in cities such as Beijing where the per capita SMS usage has fallen to 36 from 42 a year ago. And the trend is continuing…

Facing the downfall of SMS usage, Indian telecom companies are facing the heat as well.
As observed, Bharti Airtel’s June quarter results for 2013 showed that the revenues from SMS usage have come down to 8.2%, compared to nearly 11%, a year ago. But in the same period, Airltel’s revenue from data usage (Internet consumption) increased to staggering 90% if compared to last year. See the chart that shows a clear comparison!

Similarly, Idea Cellular is also getting less revenue from SMS as compared to previous years, but its revenues from Internet usage is at all time high. Its 3G Data revenue per user has increased by Rs 20 and currently it’s at Rs 109 in the June quarter, which is exponential growth in terms of Indian market.
Not only SMS, but Voice usage trends of Indians will also give jitters to telecom companies. Two years ago, an average Indian used to make 5 calls a day and in July, 2013, the figure remains the same. This means that although telecom companies have added more subscribers, the voice usage is the same.
Services which use Voice over Internet (VoIP) makes calling to any person in the world almost free. And the new and informed smart phone user from India is smart enough to know which services to use to keep his monthly billing low.
Gartner India has already predicted that revenues from SMS would slowly extinct in Asia and rest of the world in coming years.
I suppose that the time is ripe for telecom companies to look out for alternate revenue streams to counter this SMS void. And I hope that a higher data charge is not the option which they are thinking!
What is your view on this? Do you actively use SMS today as you used earlier? Will you miss SMS if telecom companies decide to shut down this service? Share your views here!

How Sygic Offline Navigation Works?

We downloaded the app to test its features, and were left quite impressed. Sygic India navigation app is not light weight. Android users first need to download 44.4 mb app after which they need to download additional plugin (around 37mb) and maps of states where offline navigation is needed.
We downloaded entire Maharashtra map which was over 112mb.

Google Encrypts Search Keywords & Changes SEO Forever!

Google Encrypts Search Keywords & Changes SEO Forever!

Google announced that from now on, all searches would be encrypted.
And this means a lot to Online Marketing. If converted this into one sentence, this means that SEO has changed forever.

First of all, here is the official Google statement, which they gave to Search Engine Land, the biggest SEO blog on this earth.
“We added SSL encryption for our signed-in search users in 2011, as well as searches from the Chrome omnibox earlier this year. We’re now working to bring this extra protection to more users who are not signed in.”
Google SEO | Google Encrypts Search Keywords & Changes SEO Forever!

Background

During January, 2011, Chrome had rolled out critical change in their internal process. They started encrypting searches for all Gmail users. This means that whenever Chrome sends out search data, it is encrypted and secured. Hence, no analytics tool can trace the keywords which a Google searcher has typed in.
Slowly, this has spread to all users, and as of now, irrespective of Google login, every search is encrypted inside Chrome.
In October 2011, Google did the same. They started encrypting searches for all users who were logged into Google. This created a lot of chaos for Online Marketers and SEOs as we were not able to track the keywords which they are searching.
And last week, Google has announced that every search done on its search engine would be encrypted. Hence, from now on, no one would be able to find out which search terms have been typed by searchers.
Hence, analytics tools won’t be able to figure out which keyword brought us how much traffic to any page of any website/blog.
Let it slowly sink into you: No keywords data from now on. And this means SEO has changed for ever!

Why SEO Has Changed?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is an Online Marketing strategy, wherein we research the major keywords relevant for any business, and accordingly devise plans to conquer that keyword. The goal of an SEO is to make sure that when anyone searches those keywords on Google and other search engines, then our websites should meet the user at the top position (or atleast in the first page of results).
Once the SEO operations starts, and traffic starts coming in, we observe Google Analytics or any other analytics platform, and check the incoming traffic, filtered by keyword data to find the effectiveness of our SEO planning. Based on the incoming traffic for relevant keywords, we tweak/twist our strategy so as to get maximum leverage.
But since Google has decided to start encrypted searches, this means that no analytics platform can track the keywords which a searcher types in. This converts to total mayhem when it will come to track the ROI and effectiveness of our SEO campaigns.
No keyword data means no SEO, in very plain language!

Alternative?

The million dollar question, which is intriguing the online marketing industry. As I have observed this industry, I can say that SEO has now transformed into Integrated Content Marketing + Online Reputation. Social Media has become more relevant than ever, and Google is pushing us into Paid Search mode.
Although there can’t be any alternative to SEO, but yes, it has transformed.
